Teahupoo finished in all three of the places in the last three runnings of this race and is tipped to get a second win at his fourth attempt. His stable- and ownermate Bob Olinger beat him in this last year, helped by a great ride from Rachael Blackmore, but Teahupoo was able to turn that form around at Christmas at Leopardstown, the third of three victories in a row. The two horses have had some epic battles and will both go down as greats, but Teahupoo is two years younger meaning he should be the better of the two here.
Honesty Policy is well supported and it is difficult to rule out anything in the green and gold stripes, but he has shown very little in open company having been beaten by Impose Toi in his only run back in November. The winner that day is a 12/1 shot here and others are preferred.Kabral Du Mathan is probably the leading English hope in the race, won his only open grade two contest so far here on New Year’s Day, but that race was over a half mile shorter and the second third and fourth go to the festival in handicaps rather than championship races.
The faviourite Teahupoo is the main selection here but Ma Shantou is worthy of each way consideration. He has run at Cheltenham three times already this season and finished first on every occasion. This will be harder but at the prices he looks a very solid each way bet.
Oldschool Outlaw and Wodhooh are the selections for the Mares’ races (novices’ and open respectively) whilst Regents Stroll is the pick for the Golden Miller. Jonbon is tipped to win the Ryanair despite his perceived inability at Cheltenham. Supremely West and Monbeg Genius are the picks for the handicaps.
